Why we invested in Chara Technologies
Why we invested in Chara Technologies
Why we invested in Chara Technologies
We believe Chara is uniquely positioned to reimagine the global motor industry with its pioneering rare-earth-free Synchronous Reluctance (SynRM) motors designed for large-scale applications. At a time when global supply chains remain vulnerable to China’s dominance in rare-earth mining and export restrictions, Chara’s innovation offers a sustainable, high-performance alternative that eliminates this dependency without compromising efficiency or torque. By solving a problem that sits at the intersection of technology, sustainability, and geopolitics, Chara has the potential to emerge as a category-defining company in a multi-billion-dollar global market.

Redefining motor technology
Redefining motor technology
Chara is reimagining how the world moves by addressing one of the most critical and overlooked challenges in the global motor industry, dependence on rare-earth materials. Permanent magnets, which account for nearly 40% of the cost of traditional PMSM motors, are sourced almost entirely from China, leaving OEMs exposed to price volatility, supply disruptions, and geopolitical risk. Chara’s rare-earth-free Synchronous Reluctance (SynRM) motors eliminate this dependency while delivering efficiency, torque, and drive-cycle performance that rival, and often exceed, permanent magnet alternatives. By tightly integrating motor and controller design, the team has overcome engineering barriers that have constrained the industry for decades, from torque ripple to control complexity. In doing so, Chara is not only pioneering one of the first automotive-grade SynRM platforms globally but also enabling a sustainable, cost-competitive, and geopolitically resilient alternative for the world’s next generation of mobility and energy systems.

Strong unit economics
Strong unit economics
What excites us about Chara is its ability to challenge the long-assumed “green premium.” The company is proving that sustainability and performance don’t have to come at higher cost. By offering a rare-earth-free motor that delivers comparable efficiency and torque at 15–20% lower cost, Chara is setting a new benchmark for what clean technology can achieve. Its integrated offering, combining the motor, controller, gearbox, validation, and post-sales support, gives OEMs a seamless, cost-efficient experience while strengthening Chara’s margins. With cost structures comparable to those of Chinese manufacturers and a clear first-mover advantage in automotive use cases, Chara has the potential to redefine unit economics for the next generation of electric mobility.

Early traction and market validation
Early traction and market validation
We have been deeply impressed by how quickly Chara has translated its technology into commercial traction. The company is already converting pilots into production orders and has secured a major OEM partnership in the three-wheeler segment, a strong validation of its product quality and execution capability. In our conversations with customers, many highlighted better range and smoother performance compared to existing solutions. Several OEMs are now progressing from validation to long-term supply discussions, while interest from international manufacturers points to expanding global relevance. This combination of engineering excellence and customer trust gives us strong conviction in Chara’s ability to scale and lead the transition toward rare-earth-free mobility.
